Door County public and private school systems do not offer string instruction or orchestra in their curricula. Therefore, the Academy fills this important need by providing access to instruments, lessons, and performance experiences.
The Door County String Academy is the only not-for-profit organization offering string instruction to students of Door County. Students currently enrolled in the Academy attend Gibraltar, Sevastopol, Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door, and Algoma Schools, and several are home-schooled students.
PERFORMANCES
While studying a stringed instrument, Academy students play classical, fiddle and contemporary style music while learning the fundamentals of music theory and history. Two formal concerts, one recital, plus various other public performances take place in a variety of locations throughout Door County, giving students valuable experience playing before music-loving audiences.
Location
Classes and ensemble rehearsals are held at Hope Church in Sturgeon Bay. Students in grades 2-12 receive a weekly 30-minute private lesson with a professional instructor. All students also have the opportunity to participate in large-group ensembles, allowing them the experience of cooperation and teamwork.
Lessons and group ensemble practices are offered to students once a week from September-May. The cost to participate in lessons and ensemble for the school year is just $400.00. Instruments are available through the Academy.
